Is there anything left to discover? Dumb question perhaps, but earlier this millennium, there was a very real sentiment in surf culture that new wave discoveries and secret spots were endangered species. Google Earth, social media, surf cams and population growth were all conspiring, said the naysayers, to kill off your chances of finding virgin patches of reef to surf, which all now contained dropped pins, surf reports and armies of trigger-happy amateur photographers splashing their pixels online.

So, is the Age of Discovery no more? Not if the people and places in the following pages are anything to go by.

Introducing MOVEMENT 45 – The Discovery Issue.

The stories and images in our 2019 hardcover instalment – our biggest issue ever at a whopping 206 pages – is our finest offering yet, featuring everything from forgotten film memoirs of Jack Lindholm by Tom Boyle, to the world’s first ever Bodyboard comic, starring Mike Stewart and Tom Morey. But wait, there’s more…

Turns out Google Earth’s still got plenty of legs left yet when it comes to new wave discoveries – we chat to four journeymen about their experiences with the world renowned application and learn where exactly it has taken them. This issue’s cover star, Tahiti’s Kirahu Thibaud, too, is another startling find – coming from nowhere to break the internet in June with one of the biggest moves ever pulled on a bodyboard.

We also discover the depths of southern Africa this issue through the lens of Alan Van Gysen and Sacha Specker, and rediscover a wave that has been largely forgotten about in bodyboarding media with Pierre Louis CostesTristan Roberts and Lewy Finnegan, while Jase Finlay’s post professional bodyboarding career is proof you’re never too old to reach for new horizons. Plus, our Board Buyers Guide offers you the chance to discover your next magic carpet.

Finally, as always, you’ll discover timeless photographic full-bleed perfection, featuring the likes of Ben Player, Tanner McDaniel, George Humphreys, Andre Botha, Ryan Hardy, Chris James, Charlie Holt, Davis BlackwellIain CampbellKim Feast, and many, many more.

Whether you’re a mysto travel fiend searching distant headlands for undiscovered waves, or you’re simply looking to rediscover your love for the boog, the images and stories in these pages are ample proof that the Age of Discovery lives on.
